Hear the forest breathe. Find where conditions for porcini look favourable.
SporaMeteo combines the Copernicus forest map with Open-Meteo modelled weather to estimate the chance that porcini are growing in 500 metre forest squares across Tuscany. Other regions are coming soon. No sign-up, no advertising, free.

An experimental tool
Why SporaMeteo is a different kind of tool
No paid app to download and no miracle forecast. An estimate built on a forest map, modelled weather and free mapping, with its limits stated.
500 metre squares
Estimates exist only for squares with at least 10% forest on the Copernicus forest map, drawn over the OpenStreetMap map.
Rain and weather of the day
The rain that fell in the last 7, 14 and 21 completed days, and the modelled weather for the day you choose, such as temperature.

How the probability is made
The estimate uses three kinds of data. This is how SporaMeteo works it out for each square.
Forest from the Copernicus map
The forest map says how much of each 500 metre square is forest. Squares with less than 10% forest get no estimate.
Rain of recent days
We count the rain that fell in the last 7, 14 and 21 completed days. These are past totals, not future rain.
Weather of the chosen day
Modelled weather for the day you choose, such as temperature. It is a calculation for an area of about 11 by 8 km, not a measurement at your point. Many squares share the same weather.
Estimate for 8 days
The data become a percentage for today and for each of the next seven days, so you can pick the day. The estimate is experimental and not yet validated.
SporaMeteo probability scale
Visual interpretation of probability indices on the cartographic map
Elusive / Dry
Arid ground or negative thermal shock present.
Baseline Conditions
Start of mycelial incubation after the first rains.
Favourable
Thermal window and water accumulation in balance.
Highly Favourable
Optimal weather and forest conditions.

Foraging ethics and the experimental estimate
Respect for the fungal ecosystem and care in the mountains matter for everyone who visits the forest.
Experimental estimate
The SporaMeteo percentage is an experimental estimate that has not been validated. It is the chance that porcini are growing somewhere inside the square. It is not your personal chance of finding them and it does not promise a mushroom at one point.
Nature follows complex dynamics. Use SporaMeteo to help choose where to go, not as a treasure map.
verified The 4 rules of the responsible forager
Always check regional, provincial or municipal rules and carry the right picking permit before you go into the forest.
Plastic bags and airtight containers are banned. Rigid baskets let spores spread naturally as you walk.
Do not destroy or kick mushrooms you do not know or that are inedible. Every species plays a vital part in the balance of the undergrowth.
Always have your harvest checked at the free mycology inspection of the local ASL health authority before you eat it.
